Forming in the Coral Sea on February 20, 2025, Cyclone Alfred rapidly intensified into a Category 4 system by February 27. It made landfall in southeastern Queensland between March 6 and 8, marking the region’s most southern cyclone landfall in half a century.
The storm unleashed torrential rain and severe flooding across Hervey Bay, Ipswich, and the Lockyer Valley. Hervey Bay recorded up to 500mm of rainfall in just a few hours on March 9, triggering flash floods that inundated homes and businesses. Meanwhile, the Logan and Albert rivers in Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley swelled beyond major flood levels, causing widespread destruction.
Recovery efforts are in full swing, with authorities working to restore power, clear debris, and support impacted communities as they begin the long road to rebuilding.
Human Appeal Australia’s QLD Branch in collaboration with Islamic College of Brisbane and Islamic Care organised a free food drive through, “Meal for ALL” dedicated to distribute food to locals. Which encouraged wider participation.
